GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats earned an 85-79 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over the Westminster Titans Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Thiel trailed Westminster 40-38 at halftime and by as many as 12 points with 12:36 remaining in the second half. The Tomcats chipped away at the lead and, using a 22-9 run, went ahead 70-69 on
Tyreik Burton (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen)'s three-pointer with a little more than five minutes left in the game.
Mert Ozkaynak (Izmir, Turkey/T.C. Williams) eventually secured the win for the Tomcats by making 6-of-6 shots from the charity line with less than 30 seconds to play.
The win gave Thiel a regular season sweep over Westminster. The Tomcats defeated the Titans 101-68 in their conference opener on Nov. 30.
Burton scored a game-best 21 points for the Tomcats while adding four assists.
Josh Lumbus (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) scored 20 points while
Alonzo Brown (Largo, Fla./Pinellas Park) netted 13 points.
Clandell Cetoute (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) led the Tomcats with 10 rebounds and swatted three shots.
Jarret Vrabel recorded a double-double for the Titans with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Deontay Scott scored 17 points while corralling nine rebounds.
The Tomcats (9-6, 5-5 PAC) will take on the Thomas More Saints Wednesday on the road. The PAC game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
