Baker’s grand slam lifts Tomcats over Golden Tornadoes

Thiel, Geneva split season-ending doubleheader

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team concluded the 2016 season Saturday by splitting a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes. Thiel won the first game 6-3 in eight innings before suffering a 6-4 loss in the second game.

Tied 1-1 after seven innings in the first game, the Tomcats clinched the win with five runs in the top of the eighth inning. Reesman drove in the first run in the top of the eighth before the next batter, Cara Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry), cleared the bases with a grand slam, which sailed over the fence in right field.

Geneva picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth on Ashley Grow's two-run homer, but the Tomcats held on to win 6-3.

Geneva led 1-0 after one inning, but the Tomcats tied up the game in the fourth frame on Shyanne Sanders (Herminie, Pa./Yough)' RBI-single to center field.

A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) led Thiel with three hits in the first game while Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) notched a pair of singles. Baker drove in four runs on her eighth-inning grand slam.

Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the win, her eighth of the season. She allowed three runs while limiting Geneva to five hits.

Thiel built up a 3-0 lead in the second game. Baker pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the first inning on a 2-RBI single to center field. In the second inning, Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) increased Thiel's lead to 3-0 on Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch)'s sacrifice fly to right field.

Thiel continued to lead 3-0 until Geneva scored two runs in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead into the seventh. Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) hit a solo home run in the seventh, but the Tomcats would get no closer.

Carney, Baker and Fike each tallied two hits in the second game. Fike hit one double while Carney hit a solo home run. Baker recorded a pair of RBIs.

Brianna Flynn (Clark, Pa./Sharpsville) took the loss. She allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings of work.

The Tomcats finished the 2016 season 14-20 overall and 8-10 in the PAC.
