Thiel holds on to defeat Grove City, 7-6

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team downed the Grove City Wolverines 7-6 in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest Friday afternoon at Tomcat Park.

After Grove City struck first in the top of the first inning, Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) knocked an RBI-double to deep center field in the bottom half of the first that allowed Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) to score from third base.

Grove City added runs in the top of the second and the top of the fifth before Thiel answered by hanging a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mitchell brought home the first run in the bottom of the fifth on a single through the left side that plated Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport). Two batters later, Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/ESIT) scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). A wild pitch by Grove City's Drew Landis to Mosley allowed Mitchell to score from third. Mosley then took Landis deep to center field for a two-run home run that also scored Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic).

Grove City got two of those runs back in the top of the sixth but Thiel added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mosley scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville).

Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) shut down a late Grove City rally with two outs when Nolan Myers flied out to Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold) in right field to pick up his first save of the season.

Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) earned his sixth win of the season. He struck out three while allowing only three earned runs. Alex Yoder (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Patrick Fitzpatrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) combined to pitch two scoreless innings in relief.

Thiel (25-10, 14-5 PAC) will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow when they travel to Grove City for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
