FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team split a doubleheader against the Haverford Fords on the second day of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Tomcats walked off in the first game of the doubleheader against the Fords winning 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tomcats were trailing by two entering the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tomcats got on the board after a sacrifice fly to left field by
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) scored
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) from third.
To start the bottom of seventh inning,
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) led of the inning with a walk. Doody then reached base on a fielder's choice, sacrifice bunt when Mosley beat out a throw from the catcher to second base.
Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/ESIT) was then subbed in for Doody as a pinch runner. After Patrice and Mosley advanced on a errant pickoff throw to second base by the Fords pitcher,
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) knocked a walk-off two RBI single on a hard-hit groundball that deflected off the shortstop's face into center field that scored Mosley and Patrice.
Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) picked up the win pitching a complete game, striking out four batters and only allowing two runs and six hits.
The Tomcats weren't able to replicate their comeback from the first game in the second half of the doubleheader against the Fords, falling 7-5.
The Fords struck first with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Tomcats got a run back in the top of the third inning when
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) tripled home Mitchell on a hit to the right-center field gap.
The Tomcats scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Mosley crushed a two RBI double down the left field line that scored Koller and
Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina).
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) added the third run in the fourth on a RBI groundout that brought Mosley home.
The game was all nodded up at five in the top of the fifth inning when Koller scored Elko on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Fords took the lead for good when they scored In the bottom of the fifth inning.
On the day, Koller went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Elko had three hits in the doubleheader while Mitchell and Mosley scored two runs for the Tomcats.
The Tomcats (2-1) will be back in action Tuesday when they take on the Dominican University Stars. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. from Terry Park.
