Wild Pitches lead Thiel over Rockford

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A late-game wild pitch once again propels the Thiel College baseball team to victory for the second time in Florida, this time over the Rockford Regents 3-2 on the fifth day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Tomcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) led off the inning with a walk and proceeded to swipe both second and third base before Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/ESIT) hit a RBI groundout to second.

The Tomcats added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Drew Dellert (Dover, Del./Poly-Tech) scored on a wild pitch from Rockford's Joseph Valdez.

Rockford proceeded to tie up the ballgame at two in the top of the sixth. Each of the two runs came wit two outs in the inning.

After Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) singled to center field and advanced on a wild pitch, he was pinch ran for by Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville). Marino advanced to third on a groundout to the pitcher by Patrice. During Zach Hudacek's at bat, Rockford's Adam O'Malley threw a wild pitch that scored Marino from third.

Tanner Teconchuk (North Warren, Pa./Warren) earned the win for the Tomcats, picking up his first career win. Teconchuk pitched three shutout innings in relief of the starter Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire), striking out three Regents. Elko notched a quality start for the Tomcats with six strikeouts and only allowing five hits in six innings of work.

Genco and Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) both recorded multi-hit games while Patrice picked up the only RBI for the Tomcats.

The Tomcats (4-2) will continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday, taking on the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. First pitch from Terry Park will be at 3 p.m.
