NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College men's basketball team cruised to a 101-68 victory over the Westminster Titans in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener on Wednesday.
All five Thiel starters scored double-digits in the win. Junior guard
Tyreik Burton (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) collected 23 points to set a new career-high. Burton went 8-of-15 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from behind the three-point line. Burton paced the offense by dishing out a game-high six assists.
Junior forward
Avril Campbell (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) notched his second double-double of the season when he scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Campbell connected on 6-of-8 shots from the floor while going 7-of-11 from the charity stripe. Fellow junior forwards
Josh Lumbus (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) and
Clandell Cetoute (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) tallied 16 and 13 points respectively. Cetoute was a rebound away from a double-double with nine rebounds while Lumbus chipped in with six rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Alonzo Brown (Largo, Fla./Pinellas Park) notched 12 points with five rebounds and four assists.
The Thiel bench contributed 18 points, 16 points and seven assists. Freshmen
Nyric Gosley (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) and
Terrance Holloway (Farrell, Pa./Farrell) notched six and five points apiece. Gosley pulled down four assists while Holloway handed out three assists off the bench.
Thiel never trailed in the game and got out to a 35-point lead, their biggest advantage of the game, when Brown converted on a layup with 5:44 remaining in the second half.
Jason Pilarski, Ricky Roth and Cameron Kane-Johnson each had nine points for Westminster
Thiel shot 55.1 (38-69) from the field with 7-of-13 from three-point territory and 18-of-25 in free throws. The Tomcats held a 49-35 edge in rebounding over Westminster.
Thiel (5-0, 1-0 PAC) will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 3 when they host the Thomas More Saints in a PAC matchup. Tip off will follow the women's game at around 3 p.m.
