GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's soccer team suffered a hard-fought 3-2 double overtime loss to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
After a scoreless first half,
Josh Evjene (Orrstown, Pa./Chambersburg) stole a Waynesburg through ball in the 49th minute and passed it to
Alexander Green (Cleveland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) in the top of the box, who chipped the goalkeeper to give Thiel the 1-0 lead early in the second half.
Waynesburg tied the game at one in the 54th minute when Austin Zurik scored off a free kick from Justin Buberl.
Thiel regained the lead in the 78th minute when Evjene headed home a
Zachary Oliver (Bridgeport, Ohio/St. Clairsville) pass off a cross from
Jordan Lilley (Jamestown, Ohio/Greeneview).
Waynesburg forced overtime late in the second half when Matt Hlasnick scored on a deflection off a Thiel defender.
Chad Palucka gave Waynesburg the victory in the second overtime period when his shot trickled in past
Christian Conrad (Barberton, Ohio/Central Catholic) after a save on the previous shot in the box by Zack Benedict.
Conrad made seven stops in goal for Thiel while James Snyder made five saves for Waynesburg.
The Tomcats will head down to Crestview Hills, Ky. on Monday to take on the Thomas More Saints in a PAC match. The action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at BB&T Field.
