LATROBE, Pa. – The third-seeded Thiel Tomcats were defeated in the semifinals of the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) Tournament by the second-seeded Saint Vincent Bearcats Friday at Chuck Noll Field, 12-8.
The Bearcats led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, but the Tomcats trailed by just two goals (6-4) at the half behind second-quarter goals by
Brennen O'Shea (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley),
Timothy O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) Sam Raymond (Davis Park N.Y./Bellport Senior) and
Edward Kargbo (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams).
The Tomcats cut the lead down to just one goal twice in the third quarter on markers by
Zachary Macurak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and
Edward Kargbo (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), but the Bearcats outscored the Tomcats 5-2 down the stretch to secure a berth in the conference championship game. Saint Vincent will play Transylvania on the road Sunday in the ORLC title game at 1 p.m.
Timothy O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Kargbo led the Tomcats with two goals apiece.
Brennen O'Shea (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Raymond finished with a goal and an assist apiece. Nick Pensyl led Saint Vincent with five goals and two assists.
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) made 16 saves for the Tomcats while Greg Gonzalez made 10 saves for the Bearcats.
Thiel finished the 2015 season with a 10-5 overall record and a 4-2 ORLC record.
