Thiel records win number 20 in sweep over Geneva

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team cruised to a doubleheader and series sweep over the Geneva Golden Tornadoes in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Saturday afternoon.
 
Scoring all of their runs in the first three innings, the Tomcats secured a 16-2 win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Tomcats scored six runs in the first inning. Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) scored the first run of the game on a groundout that scored Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) followed with a RBI double to right field that scored Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City). Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) then singled to center to bring home Brumbaugh. Elko came home after Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) hit into a fielder's choice. In his second at-bat of the first, Trinch hit a single to left field that scored Genco and Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush).
 
The Tomcats brought home three runs in the second, two of them came home on a two RBI single to left field that scored Brumbaugh and Elko. Elko had recorded a single earlier in the inning that scored Smith.
 
After Geneva scored a run in the top of the third, the Tomcats responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Smith singled home Doody to open the scoring in the third. Elko then brought home Smith on a single to center. Brumbaugh came home on a passed ball past the catcher. Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) then tripled to right center that scored Elko and Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan). Mosley came home on a RBI single by Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic). Smith scored Koller on a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
The Tomcats had 22 total hits in the game. Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City), Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington), Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) and Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) each had three hits a piece for the Tomcats. Smith and Koller each recorded three RBIs for the Tomcats.
 
Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) only gave up one run on four hits and struck out four Golden Tornadoes in five innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the season.
 
In the second game, Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central), Alex Yoder (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) teamed up to shutout Geneva 9-0. Thiel scored a run in the first when Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).
 
Thiel scored four runs in the third. Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) scored when Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) walked with the bases loaded. Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) then singled to left field that brought Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) home. Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) singled to center field and scored Smith and Brumbaugh.
 
The Tomcat added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pad the lead for the pitching staff.
 
Nozicka recorded his fourth win of the season, striking out three in five innings of work.
 
The Tomcats (20-7, 10-5 PAC) will travel to Crestview Hills, Ky. on Tuesday, April 14 to take on the conference-leading Thomas More Saints in a pivotal PAC doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
