Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – If football games were only 30 minutes long, the Thiel Tomcats would have pulled off perhaps the biggest upset in Division III Saturday against the 22
nd-ranked Thomas More Saints.
Trailing the Tomcats 27-21 at the half, the Saints lived up to their ranking in the second half by scoring 45 unanswered points en route to a 66-27 win at Alumni Stadium in the first Presidents' Athletic Conference game of the season for both teams.
After receiving the opening kickoff, the Tomcats embarked on a 13-play touchdown drive that covered 13 plays and 80 yards in 6:22.
Ron Howard (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) scored the Tomcats' first touchdown of the afternoon on a 17-yard pass from
Ryan Radke (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) in a fourth-and-one situation.
Thomas More knotted the score, 7-7, on its first possession of the game when Domonique Hayden scored on a four-yard run, capping off a 60-yard drive.
The Tomcats reclaimed the lead, 14-7, early in the second quarter when Radke threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this one a 32-yarder to
Tim Walker (Cleveland, Ohio/Warrensville Heights). It was Thiel's second long touchdown drive of the game, a 10-play effort over 89 yards that absorbed nearly five minutes of the game clock.
Hayden answered Walker's touchdown with a touchdown of his own on Thomas More's next drive on a one-yard run.
Thiel's offense drove the length of the field again on its next possession, which ended on a one-yard touchdown run by fullback
Rich Smallwood (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell). The drive was 77-yards long and consumed 3:30 over nine plays.
Hayden recorded his third rushing touchdown of the game on the Saints' next drive, scoring from 13 yards out to force the third tie of the game, 21-21.
The Tomcats got a big special teams splash play late in the second quarter, which led to the go-ahead score. Punting from his own 35-yard line,
Cody McClelland (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) blasted the ball all the way down to the Thomas More 10-yard line. Thomas More's returner fumbled the punt, and
Brandon Wolfe (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) recovered the fumble at the two-yard line.
The Tomcats took a 27-21 lead four plays later when Radke scored on a sneak from one yard out. The extra point snap and hold did not go smoothly, and
Pat Shaffer (Loyalton, Calif./Truckee)'s desperation pass failed, but the Tomcats held a 27-21 lead over the Saints at the half.
Unfortunately, the second half belonged to the Saints, who scored six touchdowns and a field goal without allowing another Thiel score.
Hayden scored two rushing touchdowns on runs of two and 15 yards in the second half to finish the day with five touchdowns on the ground. In all, Hayden ran for 154 yards on 20 carries.
Goose Cohorn also caught two second-half touchdown passes for the Saints on throws of 51 and 26 yards from quarterback Jensen Gebhardt. Cohorn caught four passes for 132 yards Saturday.
Radke led the Tomcats with 92 yards on the ground on 16 carries with one touchdown run.
Taylor Fink (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) also ran for 45 yards on 21 carries.
Radke completed 18-of-35 passes for 192 yards. He threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Gebhardt connected on 10-of-15 passes for 247 yards. He threw two touchdown passes, both to Cohorn.
Tom Thorpe (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) led Thiel's defense with eight tackles. In addition,
Wes Schmidt (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) made six tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage, and had one sack.
Austin Copeland made eight tackles for Thomas More while Erick Butler notched two sacks. Darrell Davis and Kyle Fuller each recorded on interception for the Saints Saturday.
The Tomcats (1-2, 0-1) will travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday to face the Case Western Reserve Spartans. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
