Box Score HAMBURG, N.Y. –
Sean Loney (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) each scored a pair of goals Saturday for the Thiel men's lacrosse team, but it wasn't enough as they fell 12-6 to the Hilbert College Hawks.
Loney scored the game's first goal with roughly 13 minutes remaining in the first quarter to stake Thiel to an early 1-0 lead. The Hawks scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 advantage when Doug Takac scored with just 17 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
The two squads each scored four goals in the second period, with the Hawks holding a narrow 6-5 lead at the half.
Matthew Simon gave the Hawks a 3-goal edge (8-5) when he scored with three and a half minutes remaining in the third period.
Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) responded with a goal of his own a minute and a half later to cut Hilbert's lead down to 8-6.
The Hawks closed out the contest on a 4-0 run, including a marker with just three seconds to play in the third, to secure the 12-6 victory.
Loney and Ahia led the Tomcats with two goals apiece. Papa and
Timothy O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored a goal and added an assist, respectively while Simon, who tallied two goals and two assists, led the Hawks.
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) made 10 saves in goal for Thiel while Brenden Deady made 13 saves for Hilbert.
The Tomcats (5-4) will return to action on Tuesday, April 15, when they travel to Houghton College to take on the Highlanders. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
