Eric Mallinger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) notched his eighth double-double of the season Saturday, and the Thiel men's basketball team defeated Mercer County rival Grove City 59-45 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) regular season finale for both teams.
Mallinger scored 10 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Charlie Thomas (North Warren Pa./Warren Area) led the Tomcats in scoring with 14 points, making all three of his attempted three pointers. Thomas also recorded five boards, the second most on the team Saturday.
Khari Bess (Waldorf, Md./Maurice J. Mcdonough) added 13 points and collected seven steals for the Tomcats while
Josh Lumbus (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) scored eight points and gathered three rebounds in 22 minutes of action off of the bench.
Thiel was 21-of-41 (51.2%) from the field while Grove City shot 16-of-59 (27.1%), making only five out of 26 shots from behind the three-point line.
Mitch Marmelstein led Grove City with 13 points while Josh Patterson came off the bench to chip in 11 points.
Thiel (10-12, 7-9 PAC) earned the sixth seed in the 2014 Presidents' Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. The Tomcats will travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take on the third-seeded Saint Vincent Bearcats on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
