Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) and
Mike Bryant (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) each scored three goals Saturday for the Thiel men's lacrosse team in their first game of the 2014 season. However, the Tomcats suffered a 10-8 loss to the W&J Presidents at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
Papa scored his first goal of the game with nine minutes remaining in the first quarter to tie up the score, 2-2. The Presidents went on to lead 3-2 after 15 minutes of play when John Bursch scored a man-up goal with just three seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
The Presidents outscored the Tomcats 4-2 in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Papa scored two goals 49 seconds apart midway through the third period to cut W&J's lead down to 7-6 entering the final 15 minutes of play.
Zachary Fredericks gave the Presidents a 2-goal lead (8-6) when he scored two minutes into the fourth quarter. Bryant responded with two straight goals to tie up the contest 8-8 with 6:35 remaining in regulation.
Unfortunately, W&J's Kyle Heinig scored two straight goals down the stretch to give his team a 10-8 victory.
Papa and Bryant led the Tomcats with three goals and an assist apiece. Heinig scored three goals and added two helpers for the Presidents while Tim Angell scored three goals and added an assist.
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) made seven saves for the Tomcats while Conor Crowe made 13 saves for the Presidents.
The Tomcats (0-1) will return to action Saturday when they host the Alma Scots at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome at 1 p.m.
