Bess, Johnson pace Tomcats in loss to Yellow Jackets

Josh Johnson scored 14 points Wednesday against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets.
Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Khari Bess (Waldorf, Md./Maurice J. Mcdonough) and Josh Johnson (Monroeville, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) scored 14 points apiece Wednesday, but the Thiel College men's basketball team was defeated on the road by the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, 62-59.
 
In addition to his 14-point effort, Bess led the Tomcats with five steals and grabbed six rebounds. Eric Mallinger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) also scored 10 points and added seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
 
Josh Propst and B.J. Durham led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points apiece while Christian Koroly scored 10 points and added six rebounds.
 
The Tomcats trailed the Yellow Jackets at the half, 29-24. Thiel opened the second half on a 10-0 run, behind points in the paint from Charlie Thomas (North Warren Pa./Warren Area) (4), Luke Kochka (Monroeville, Pa. /Gateway) (4), and Bess (2).
 
Thiel led by six points, it's largest lead in the second half, with a little more than seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Yellow Jackets managed to tie up the score, 50-50, with 4:24 remaining after E.J. Coleman made a pair of throws from the charity stripe. Waynesburg took a 52-50 lead less than 30 seconds later on a bucket from Christian Koroly. Waynesburg would not trail the rest of the game, leading by as many as six points down the stretch.
 
The Tomcats (8-12, 5-9 PAC) will be back in action Saturday when they host the Thomas More Saints. Tipoff at Beeghly Gymnasium is set for 3 p.m.
