GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats won the Mercer County Cup Saturday with a 42-21 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over the Grove City Wolverines.
With the win the Tomcats finished the 2014 season with a 4-6 record, the best finish since the 2006 team went 5-5. It was also Thiel's first win over Grove City since 2006.
The Tomcats scored on their first possession of the game, marching 30 yards in six plays on a drive that ended when
Roosevelt Brown (University Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) plowed into the end zone from one yard out.
After a Thiel fumble, Grove City tied up the score late in the first quarter when Aaron Lundmark threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Brian Wells.
The Tomcats took control of the game in the second quarter, racking up three unanswered touchdowns before halftime.
Marcus Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./University Prep)'s three-yard touchdown catch from
Ryan Radke (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) gave the Tomcats a 14-7 lead with 10:11 remaining in the second quarter.
Backed up deep in Wolverine territory on the ensuing drive, Lundmark's third-and-15 pass from the 11-yard line was picked off by senior defensive end
Cody McClelland (Sarver, Pa./Freeport), who returned the ball 15 yards to the house to give the Tomcats a 21-7 lead.
After forcing the Wolverines to go three-and-out on their next possession, the Tomcats claimed a 28-7 lead when Radke scored on a 9-yard run with 5:06 left in the first half, capping off a 9-play drive that covered 41 yards in four minutes.
Radke also scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run early in the third quarter, and
Taylor Fink (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) scored on a 15-yard run on an option pitch from Radke midway through the third quarter to put the Tomcats up, 42-7.
The Wolverines scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one on a 1-yard run by Steve Maskrey and another on a 31-yard pass from Tyler Kepple to Sam Ivan.
Radke completed 14-of-23 passes Saturday for 166 yards and one touchdown pass. He also led the Tomcats on the ground with 123 yards and two touchdowns on 19 totes. Radke finished the season with 2,042 passing yards and 904 rushing yards. He threw 19 touchdown passes on the season and scored 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Fink also ran for 73 yards and one score on 11 carries Saturday. Johnson caught seven passes, one of which was a touchdown grab, for 99 yards.
Senior linebacker
Jack Sindlinger (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) led the Tomcats with six tackles.
Mike Finchio (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) recorded four stops, two of which were behind the line of scrimmage. McClelland and freshman safety
Joe Serratore (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park) each had one interception.
