Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – Waynesburg University outlasted Thiel College, 79-76, Wednesday night in an overtime barnburner in men's basketball action at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The hot-shooting Yellow Jackets led by as many as seven in the second period but the determined Tomcats methodically chipped away at the formidable deficit – tying the game, 66-66, on an and-one by junior guard
Josh Johnson (Monroeville, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) with 27 seconds left in regulation.
However, the Yellow Jackets quickly regained momentum in OT period, outscoring the Tomcats 13-10 to steal the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win away from Thiel.
Sophomore guard
Khari Bess (Waldorf, Md./Maurice J. Mcdonough) led Thiel with 19 points, five rebounds, five assists, and eight steals. Junior forward
Eric Mallinger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) added 17 points, seven rebounds and blocked a season-high six shots. Junior guard
Charlie Thomas (North Warren Pa./Warren Area) and sophomore guard
Luke Kochka (Monroeville, Pa. /Gateway) were the final Tomcats to score in double-figures, adding 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Waynesburg's Jacob Fleegle led all scorers with 21 points.
The Tomcats are back in action on Saturday, January 18, when they take on the Grove City Wolverines. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
