Box Score CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Despite a second half run by the Tomcats that trimmed the Thomas More lead down to three with under five minutes to play, the Saints weathered the late push by Thiel and pulled out a 65-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference win in men's basketball action Saturday.
Down by as many as 13 points early in the second half, an 8-2 run highlighted by a
Luke Kochka (Monroeville, Pa. /Gateway) layup with 4:54 to play got Thiel to within one possession of the Saints, 54-51.
Consecutive baskets by the Saints pushed the lead back to seven (58-51) with just over three and a half minutes to play, but the Tomcats answered with back-to-back layups by
Charlie Thomas (North Warren Pa./Warren Area) and
Justin Dade (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) to make it 58-55 Saints with 1:23 to play.
That was, however, as close as Thiel could get, as Thomas More closed out the contest on a 7-3 run to seal the win.
Thiel had three players reach double-digit scoring totals, led by junior Joshua Johnson, who finished with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field. Kochka finished with 12 points and three steals, while junior
Eric Mallinger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) posted his second-straight double-double, tallying 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Drew Mumford paced the Saints (5-9, 4-1) with 16 points.
Thiel (4-7, 1-4) returns to action on Wednesday when they host the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
