Thiel men’s lacrosse team improves to .500 with win over Bethany

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. — Led by freshman Tim O'Shea, the Tomcat men's lacrosse team saw their best offensive output since the team opened play in 2011. The Tomcats posted a program-best 22 goals in a 22-5 win over Bethany College on Tuesday.

O'Shea became just the second Tomcat in the history of the program to notch double-digit points in a single game, and with his nine goals and two assists, bests the record of ten points set by Andy Shaver in a 21-5 win over Penn State Abington on March 24, 2012.

O'Shea notched the first goal of the game for the Tomcats (4-4) just two minutes and 50 seconds into play, and the Tomcats added five more goals before Bethany (3-8) answered with a goal of their own with 23 seconds left in the first period. Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) took the ensuing faceoff and dished off to O'Shea, who scored just seven seconds after Bethany did, to make it 7-1 at the end of the first period.

The two teams fought evenly in the second period, as each team scored two goals and the Tomcats went to the locker room at half leading 9-3.

The Tomcats outscored the Bison 13-2 in the second half, with O'Shea scoring five of his nine goals in the second half. In total, nine Tomcats including O'Shea scored, with Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) adding four goals while Alex Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Sean Loney (Linthicum, Md./North County) each scored two apiece. Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), Zachary Macurak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Jacob Paviol (Falls Village, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional), Tom Petrullo and Aaron Herman (Cannonsburg, Pa./Canon-Mcmillan) rounded out the scoring for Thiel, netting one goal each.

The Tomcats passed the ball very well, notching 12 assists on 22 goals. Papa led the way with five assists to finish with nine points, while Ahia and O'Shea each dished out two assists. Casile, Macurak and Ray McDonald (Grand Island, N.Y./Wilson Central School) also registered an assist each in the win.

With the win, the Tomcats also set a new record for wins in a single-season with four, and with five games remaining, have plenty of opportunities to add to that record.

The Tomcats will look to make it three wins in a row on Saturday when they host Wilmington College of Ohio at 4 p.m. The game will be played in honor of the Headstrong Foundation and the Tomcats will be selling Headstrong t-shirts for $15, with proceeds going to benefit the foundation.
