Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio - Playing in its first outdoor game of the season and with snow on the ground, the Thiel College men's lacrosse team fell to Mount Union College 13-8 on Wednesday.
The Tomcats attacked first, as
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) scored his fifth goal of the season with 10:10 to play in the first period to give Thiel a 1-0 lead. That lead was short lived, as Mount Union went on an 8-0 run that spanned the first and second periods, before
Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) scored his second goal of the season with 11:17 to play in the third period to narrow the Purple Raider lead to 8-2.
Mount Union once again answered in bunches, scoring four unanswered goals to increase their lead to 12-2. The Tomcats, however, responded with a four goal streak of their own, as
Sean Loney (Linthicum, Md./North County), Ahia,
Alex Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Papa all found the back of the next to bridge the gap to 12-6 with 14:20 left to play.
After a Mount Union goal extended the Purple Raider lead to 13-6, O'Shea and Loney each cranked shots past the Purple Raiders' Collin Peters to make it 13-8, but it wasn't enough as Mount Union secured the win.
Loney, Papa and Ahia each had two goals apiece. Papa added an assist, while O'Shea had a goal and an assist.
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) made nine saves on 19 shots, while
Richard Cannon (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) made three saves on six shots in relief of Cannon.
Thiel will have three days off before traveling to Steubenville, Ohio to play Franciscan on March 9.
