ERIE, Pa. – The Thiel men's volleyball team (15-8) swept the Lancaster Bible College Chargers 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-15) on Sunday to finish the Penn State Behrend Invitational a perfect 3-0.
With the win, the Tomcats extend their season-best win streak to five matches and counting. Thiel now awaits a showdown against their Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) rival, the #3-ranked Juniata College Eagles on Wednesday.
The Tomcats were led offensively by
John Turner (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs), who finished with 11 kills in the 3-0 sweep.
Dylan Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Elderton) and
Andrew Pohlod (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) each finished with six kills apiece, and
Evan Proksell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) and
Alex Ciepiela (Marilla, N.Y./Iroquios Central) chipped in four kills each.
Charlie Tindall (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa./Maplewood) shared the setting duties for Thiel, posting 17 and 13 assists, respectively, in the win.
Defensively,
Colin Vitale (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) paced the Tomcats with five digs, while
Kyle Turkalj (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) led the team with three total blocks.
Overall, the Tomcats totaled 12 team blocks, their third straight match posting double-digit team blocks.
For the Chargers (12-9), Mitch Demko was the top performer, finishing with six kills.
Thiel returns to action on March 27, when they travel to Huntingdon, Pa. to take on the #3-ranked Eagles. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
