Ahia’s three points not enough in loss to W&J

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – A five-goal fourth period helped lift Washington & Jefferson College to a 14-5 victory over Thiel in Saturday's 2013 men's lacrosse season opener at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.

Joseph Eck scored five goals with two assists to lead the visiting Presidents (1-0) offensively. Tim Angell added four goals and a pair of assists while Tom Starr chipped in three goals.

Chase Bennett totaled five ground balls while Tom Kozlowski won five-of-six face-offs. Defensively, Conor Crowe earned the victory for W&J, notching 12 saves.


Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) tallied two goals and an assist to pace the Tomcats. Zachary Macurak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Alex Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Thomas Petrullo (Wantagh, N.Y./General Douglas MacArthur) each added a goal while Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) posted two points on a pair of assists.

Papa and Patrick Gill (Millvale, Pa./Shaler Area) each recorded four ground balls while Richard Gannon posted 12 saves in defeat.

Pertrullo's score on a pass from Papa with 2:51 remaining in the first period pulled Thiel even with W&J at 2-2, but two goals by Angell and a goal by Starr saw the Presidents take a 5-2 advantage. Casile's man-up goal with just over seven minutes to go until the half saw the Tomcats get back to within two, 5-3, but consecutive goals by Starr and Zachary Fredericks for W&J pushed the lead to 7-3 at the half.

W&J went on to outscore Thiel 7-2 in the second half to claim the 14-5 win.

The Tomcats (0-1) will return to action Tuesday when they play host to Wooster College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
