Second half run helps Thomas More down Thiel 67-55

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thomas More College used a second half scoring run to help post a 67-55 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over the Thiel College Tomcats Saturday evening.

The Saints (11-3, 4-1) took a 32-23 lead into half, and ran off a 17-3 second half run to hand the Tomcats (6-6, 3-3) the loss. Thiel, despite shooting 43 percent (20-46) from the field, saw the Saints convert on 49 percent (25-51) of their field goal attempts while making just 14-of-26 free-point attempts (54%).

Senior forward Chace McKinney (Boardman, Ohio/Kennedy Catholic) and sophomore guard Kamran McCaskill (Carol City, Fla./Miami Beach) each scored in double figures, as they finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Off the bench, sophomore Eric Mallinger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) grabbed seven rebounds, blocked three shots and scored four points in 22 minutes of action. While senior A.J. Forbes (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pompano Beach) added eight points and four rebounds.

Thomas More finished with two players in double figures. Ross Renken and D'Carlo Hayes each totaled 10 points while Josef Marshall finished with nine points, converting on 4-of-6 field-goal attempts.

Thomas More never trailed and led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but surrendered a late three to Thiel's Marquis Jackson to cut the lead to 32-23 going into the break. R.J. Brownlee (Donora, Pa./Ringgold)'s layup with 17:35 to play in the second got the Tomcats to within five, 34-29, prior to the Saints using a 17-3 scoring outbreak to assume a 49-32 lead with just 12 minutes remaining. The Tomcats were able to chip the lead down to 11 (58-47) with 2:40 to play, but the Saints responded to each Thiel point as they narrowly outscored the Tomcats from that point forward, 9-8, to leave Beeghly Gymnasium with the win.

Thiel will return to action on Wednesday, January 9 when it travels to Waynesburg to take on the Yellow Jackets. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
