GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Thiel women's volleyball team picked up two victories in its homecoming tri-match. The Tomcats defeated Westminster (12-6; 6-3 PAC) in its first game in five sets (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 15-10), and picked up a win over Chatham University (0-16; 0-10 PAC) in three sets (25-13, 25-13, 25-9).
In match one, the Tomcats were put to the test as the Titans of Westminster rebounded from losing the first two sets to tie it 2-2 and send it to a fifth set. Thiel won the last set and the match with a 15-10 decision. Senior
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) led the team with 23 kills and senior
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) had 31 assists and 14 digs. The defense was also stout for the Tomcats as they registered 15 team blocks and senior
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson Milton) recorded a team-high 20 digs
The second match saw more success for the Blue and Gold as they took on Chatham University. The Tomcats were able to take the first two sets by large margins and also won set three to take the match in straight sets over the Cougars.
Once again, Barzak led the team in kills with 14 to push her per/set average to 4.6 on the day, while freshman
Stephanie Day (Millersburg, Ohio/Waynedale) recorded 22 assists. Freshman
Olivia Sipos (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) led the team in digs with 10 and sophomore
Lauren Richey (Harmarville, PA/Springdale) and freshman
Heather Reichenback (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) combined for eight kills to push the Tomcats record to 12-5 overall, and 7-1 in the PAC.
The Tomcats have now won three in a row, and will try to make it four on Friday, October 5, when they host Marietta College. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
