The Tomcat women's volleyball team was crowned the 2012 Gator Volleyball Invitational Champions after defeating Case Western Reserve in five sets on Saturday.
Thiel began the day with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-16) win over Allegheny College.
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson Milton),
Megg Andrews (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) each had eight kills, while
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) tallied 28 assists. Defensively,
Alex Hall (Norwin, Pa./Norwin) recorded 11 digs, while the team had four blocks.
The Tomcats followed that win up by handing Case Western Reserve only its second loss of the season, in a dramatic, come-from-behind victory. The Tomcats won the first set 26-24, but the Spartans rallied to win the next two sets (27-25, 25-21), putting Thiel in a 2-1 hole. The Tomcats rallied, winning the fourth set 25-19, and taking the final set 15-13 to win the Gator Volleyball Invitational.
After a 0-4 start, the Tomcats have now won seven matches in a row and sit at 7-4 and 2-0 in the PAC. They will look to extend that winning streak on Wednesday September 19, when the Tomcats host the Saint Vincent Bearcats. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
