GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Tomcats suffered a heartbreaking 16-13 loss to the Juniata Eagles Saturday in their 2012 season opener at Alumni Stadium.
The Tomcats held a 7-6 halftime lead thanks to Taylor Fink (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning)'s (Kittanning, Pa./Kittaning) 6-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
The Thiel defense held the Eagles to a pair of field goals in the first half, one from 28 yards and the other from 26 yards.
The Tomcat offense embarked on an 8-play, 67-yard drive to open the third quarter. The drive culminated with Fink's second touchdown run of the game, this one on a 1-yard plunge. The extra point was no good, but the Tomcats held a 13-6 lead.
Juniata tied up the contest, 13-13, late in the third quarter on a one-yard run by quarterback Ward Udinski.
The Eagles earned the eventual game-winning points on the toe of Scott Andrews, who booted a 27-yard field goal with 4:56 remaining in regulation.
Thiel's offense had two more drives down the stretch but neither resulted in any points. On their final drive, which began on their 1-yard line, quarterback Andrew Smith (Williamsfield, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley) (Williamsfield, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley) led the Tomcats all the way down to the Juniata 37-yard line, but his pass into the end zone for a potential game-winning TD lob fell incomplete as time expired.
The Tomcats (0-1) will head to Rochester, N.Y., Saturday to take on the University of Rochester Yellowjackets (0-0). Kickoff is set for noon.
