GREENVILLE, Pa. – Saint Vincent College scored six first quarter goals and carried a 10-4 lead into the half en route to their 15-8 win over the Tomcat men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
Saint Vincent (3-9) saw 12 players score on the day, with Will DeLanoy leading the way with three goals and a pair of assists. Mike Diggs added two goals while Nick Pensyl chipped in with a goal and two assists.
Peter Hronis had six ground balls and finished 7-for-9 on faceoff opportunities. The Bearcats were a stellar 20-of-25 on faceoffs and forced Thiel into 15 of its 32 turnovers on the day.
Adam Gunter made five stops for the Bearcats to earn the win.
Andrew Shaver (Liverpool, N.Y./West Genesee) notched his fourth three-plus goal game of the season, pacing Thiel (3-9) offensively with a hat trick.
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) scored twice and assisted on a second-quarter goal by
Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central).
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) corralled a career-high 24 saves in goal for the Tomcats. Weldon also finished with a team-high six ground balls.
Shaver's goal at the 11:00 mark of the opening period put the Tomcats out in front 1-0, but the Bearcats responded with five-straight scores to stretch their lead to 5-1 with just over six minutes to go in the first quarter.
Brent Nicholson (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) tallied a man-up goal off of an assist by
Zachary Macurak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) with 5:41 remaining in the first to bring Thiel to within three, 5-2, but Kevin Vawter's score with just under four minutes to play in the period allowed the Bearcats to carry a 6-2 lead into the second.
The Bearcats opened the second quarter outscoring the Tomcats 4-0 and extended their lead to 10-2 with just over four to go before the break. Papa and Ahia each scored in the final 2:30 of the second and saw the Saint Vincent lead cut to six, 10-4, going into the half.
Saint Vincent tallied four-straight goals in the third quarter to separate from Thiel, 14-4, and were able to limit the Tomcats offensively in the fourth to secure the 15-8 victory.
Thiel next travels to Washington, Pa. on Wednesday, April 18 to take on Washington & Jefferson College at 7 p.m.
