Big Second-Half Effort Lifts Women's Lacrosse Over Olivet

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - After notching the program's first ever victory earlier in the week, the Tomcat women's lacrosse team continued its' forward momentum with a 12-6 victory over Olivet College on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.

Carly Cobb followed a five-goal performance with another great offensive day, this time scoring four goals in the win. Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) added two goals in the victory, while one goal apiece was tallied by Kelley Bellia (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall), Sharr Matin, Jenna Simanovsky (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North), Hannah Stelmach (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin), and Abby Spriggs (Westminster, Md./Westminster).

Despite Olivet holding a 35-29 advantage in shots, and a 39-33 advantage in ground balls, goalie Asia Wallace (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) had perhaps her best performance between the pipes for the Tomcats as she stopped a season-high 18 shots, and helped hold Olivet to just 1-13 on free position opportunities.

Thiel (2-5) began the scoring just 34 seconds into the contest when Mahdi found the back of the net to give the Tomcats the 1-0 lead. Following the goal, Olivet took the lead on back-to-back goals by Taylor Guarnaccia at the 22:06 and 19:51 marks to make the score 2-1. Mahdi then added her second score of the contest when she found the back of the net on a free position shot to tie the game at two. Thiel would then outscore Olivet 3-2 over the course of the next 10 minutes, with Cobb notching two scores and Harrigan adding her only goal of the game off an assist by Victoria Williamson. With the goals Thiel entered the half with a 5-4 advantage.

The defense stood strong for Thiel in the second half, and the rattled off the first seven goals of the frame to give the Tomcats the 12-4 advantage. Two more goals by Cobb, and goals from Simanovsky, Martin, Stelmach, and Spriggs accounted for the scoring in the half. Spriggs' goal marked the first of her career in a Tomcat uniform. With the game out of reach, Olivet added two goals in the final minute of the contest to make the final 12-6.

The Tomcats will be back in action on Sunday, April 1 as they take on the Cardinals of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. The contest is scheduled for a noon start.
