DELAWARE, Ohio – In its first-ever game as a varsity athletic program at Thiel, the women's lacrosse team suffered a 11-9 setback against Ohio Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.
Meredith Wholley had four goals and three assists to lead the Battling Bishops (1-0) offensively. Cate Bailey added three goals and an assist while Annie Swanson chipped in a goal and an assist. Molly Curry and Theresa Wolfgang totaled a goal apiece.
The Bishops would score the first goal at the 29:11 mark from Molly Curry but Thiel's
Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) would quickly tie the game at 1-1 at the 25:23 mark when she scored her first goal of the season off a free position shot. Ohio Wesleyan would add four more goals to make the score 5-1, but the Tomcats would add a goal of their own when
Jenna Simanovsky (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) connected with the back of the net to score her first goal of the season.
The Bishps would close the first half on a Meredith goal, making the score 5-2.
At the start of the second half Carley Cobb closed the gap to one, 5-4, by scoring her second and third goal of the season, but the Bishops would respond with three goals of their own to expand their lead to 8-4. The Tomcats fought back and registered back-to-back goals from Mahdi and
Sharr Martin (San Diego, Calif./The Preuss School UCSD) to get back to within two, 8-6.
With the Tomcats down two, each side would score a trio of goals in the remaining time, with the Battling Bishops prevailing 11-9.
For the Tomcats, Cobb and and Mahdi scored three goals, respectively, while Martin had two and Simanovsky chipped in with one.
The Tomcats will return home to the Rissell-Schreyer Dome on Wednesday, February 29 to host Saint Vincent College. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
