GREENVILLE, Pa. – Senior middle hitter
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) recorded a team-high 12 kills to become the college's all-time career leader in the category during Thiel's 3-0 sweep of Westminster Thursday night.
Barzak tallied the record-setting kill in the third set. She passed former Tomcat outside hitter Abbey Kiger (2006-2009), who amassed 1,239 career kills in her four-year career. Barzak now has 1,242 kills in her career, 272 of which have come this season.
The Tomcats won by the set scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-21. They trailed only once throughout those three sets, as they fell behind early in the second set (6-2).
With the win, the Tomcats are now 20-7 and 13-3 in the PAC.
Thiel reaches the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2010, and the third time in Steve Brewer's seven-year tenure as head coach. It is just the sixth time in the program's 37-year history that a team has won 20 matches in a season.
The Tomcats were led defensively by
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center), who recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 16 assists and 16 digs.
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson Milton) just missed her own double-double, as she added nine kills and 11 digs.
Alex Hall (Norwin, Pa./Norwin) chipped in two service aces and 10 digs in the win.
Thiel will return to action at home Saturday for senior day. The Tomcats host PAC-leading Thomas More at 11 a.m. and finish with a match against Waynesburg at 3 p.m.
