The Tomcats avenged an early season five set loss to the College of Wooster with a 3-2 win over the Fighting Scots on Saturday.
It was the first time that a Thiel volleyball team has defeated Wooster since September 30, 2008, when that team also won in five sets.
Thiel won each of the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-21, only to see the Fighting Scots squeak out wins in the next two sets, 25-22, 25-23 to force the decisive set five. The Tomcats, determined to overcome a September 1
st loss to Wooster in which they forced a fifth set, only to lose it 15-13, flipped the script on Saturday and won the set and the match by that very same score.
The Tomcats had three women register double-digit kills, led by
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson Milton)'s double-double, 13 kills and 22 digs, which was her seventh of the season. Fellow senior
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) added 12 kills, putting her just 16 away from passing Abbey Kiger '09 for most kills in a career by a Tomcat. Junior
Leanna Yeager (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) was the third Tomcat in double-figures, chipping in 10 kills in the win.
Sharing the setting duties for Thiel was freshman
Stephanie Day (Millersburg, Ohio/Waynedale) and senior
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center), who recorded 22 and 20 assists, respectively. Sophomore
Alex Hall (Norwin, Pa./Norwin) contributed 15 digs while fellow sophomore
Lauren Downs (Mentor, OH/Mentor HS) pitched in 14 digs.
Thiel heads to Thomas More on Sunday, October 21st to take on the Saints in a battle for first place in the PAC. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
