ADA, Ohio – The Thiel women's volleyball squad opened its 2011 campaign Friday evening at the 33rd annual Ohio Northern University Invitational, posting a 3-1 win over Trine University before falling to the host Polar Bears 3-1 in the nightcap.
With her 12 kills in Thiel's 3-1 win (26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19) against Trine (0-2),
Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) cruised into fourth place on the College's all-time kills list with 867, moving past Barb Davis '93 (864). Kay also registered 16 digs.
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson Milton) totaled 12 kills and 18 digs while
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) supplied 31 assists. In her first collegiate match
Lauren Downs (Mentor, OH/Mentor HS) recorded a team-high 20 digs from her libero position.
In the 3-1 loss (25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 21-25) to the host Polar Bears Kay paced the Tomcats with 10 kills, 14 digs, and five assists. Meister tallied 27 assists and seven digs while Chine and Barzak added nine and eight kills, respectively.
Kristen Davidson finished with a match-high 19 kills for ONU (2-0). Amanda Volosin dished out 43 assists to go along with 14 digs while Ellen Grenert chipped in with nine kills and 14 digs.
Thiel (1-1) opens Saturday against Heidelberg University at noon and concludes the day with a 2 p.m. match against Defiance College.
