Women’s Volleyball Squad Honored by AVCA for Academic Excellence

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Thiel College women's volleyball squad joined 87 other NCAA Division III institutions across the nation in being recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as having earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-2011 season.

On Wednesday the AVCA announced that 478 teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-2011 season. This number once again breaks the previous years' total of 450 and sets a new all-time high for this award. The AVCA Team Academic Award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that have displayed excellence in the classroom throughout the academic year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

"I am very proud of the entire team on their ability to win this award for three consecutive years. We hold every member of our team accountable for excellence on and off the court, and they certainly delivered this past year," said sixth-year head volleyball coach Steve Brewer.

The honor is the third-straight for the Tomcats, who were recognized by the AVCA for their academic excellence following both the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years. Geneva College and Waynesburg University were the only other Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) institutions to be honored by the AVCA.
