GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Thiel men's lacrosse team notched it's second win of the season, doing so in blowout fashion with a 19-8 victory over visiting Bethany on Saturday at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
The Tomcats shrugged off a quick goal by Bethany's Kyle Arrington just 21 seconds into the game by scoring the next eight goals, all of which were unassisted.
The first four goals for the Tomcats came in the first quarter as Andy Shaver and
Benji Emile (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood ) each scored twice.
Eddie Palmer (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights),
Cameron Rako (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson),
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) and
Yancey Burks (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood ) each scored in a four-goal second quarter.
Arrington again scored to open the second half, but Thiel answered with another run, this time scoring five straight goals. Rako scored twice and
Kaleb Rose (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood), Ahia and
Taylor Zain (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) added one goal apiece.
Arrington tallied his third goal of the game midway through the third quarter, but the Tomcats answered with a streak of goals for the third time. Shaver and Ahia each scored twice and
Bret Keppler (Alvaton, Ky./Greenwood) and
Cameron Rako (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) had one goal apiece during the 6-0 run to up the lead to 19-3. Bethany scored the game's final five goals to complete the final score.
Coach Shem Johnston-Bloom's Tomcats played terrific defense on Bethany's man-up opportunites, allowing two goals on nine penalties. Thiel succesfully killed a two-minute non-releasable penalty during the game, as well as 30 seconds of play while being two men down.
Ricky Cannon picked up his second win of the season as goalie for the Tomcats. He stopped five of the eight shots he faced before exiting the game with a big lead.
Numerous players posted great statistics for the Tomcats, led by Rako's four goals and three assists. Other highlights included four goals apiece by Shaver and Ahia, two goals by
Benji Emile (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood ) and a 16-for-19 effort by Ahia on faceoffs.
In the days leading up to the game, Bloom stated the groundball battle was critical to his team's attempt at the win. The Tomcats delivered, picking up 56 groundballs to Bethany's 42. Ahia and Rose were instrumental to their team's domination of that category with nine groundballs apiece. Shaver tallied six,
Isai Colocho (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek ) had four and
Javier Molina (Miami, Fla./Ferguson) chipped in with three.
Multiple players scored their first goal or had their first assist in the win.
Kaleb Rose (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood) and
Bret Keppler (Alvaton, Ky./Greenwood) each scored for the first time this season while Kendall Harrell posted his first point with an assist on a fourth quarter goal by Rako.
Thiel will play it's final home game of the season Saturday against Washington & Jefferson in the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
