GREENVILLE, Pa. — Playing an undefeated team for the second time in three games, Thiel fell to visiting Alfred 21-3 Saturday in the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
The Saxons improved to 7-0 with the win and continued their scoring pace that has them ranked seventh in the nation in goals per game. They led 11-0 at the half and added five goals in each of the final two quarters,
Marc Zoyhofski, ranked third in Division III in points thanks to his ability to both score and distribute the ball, scored a game-high four goals for Alfred, while also registering two assists. Caleb McCaig, Derek Green, Brett Carroll, Justin Shultis and Matt Zon scored two goals apiece.
Andrew Shaver (Liverpool, N.Y., West Genesee) put the Tomcats on the board for the first time with a goal 10:36 into the third quarter. The team leader in both goals and points added another unassisted goal with 1:43 left in the game to give him 19 on the season.
Francis Ahia (Penn Hills, Pa., Penn Hills), second on the team in points, put in the other score for Thiel with his seventh goal of the season.
Alfred's Justin Becker started and stopped both shots he faced in the first half to pick up the win in goal. John Landi played the second half and made five saves on eight shot attempts.
Thiel (1-7) will face another tough opponent Saturday when it travels to play Saint Vincent. The Bearcats are 6-2.
