Hilbert Downs Thiel, 17-6

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Hilbert continued to put up big numbers on offense in a 17-6 win over homestanding Thiel in a men's lacrosse game Wednesday at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.

The Hawks entered the game with the 20th best offense in Division III, averaging just over 13 goals per game. They struck early and often in Wednesday's game, taking a 7-3 lead after one quarter and upping it to 10-5 at the half.

Ryan Wagner, who entered the contest 16th in the nation in goals per game, tallied seven goals and two assists. The team's leading scorer, Josh Baker (fifth in the country in goals per game), added two goals and three assists.

Alex Cornwell (Naples, Fla., Golden Gate)l, who came off the bench to play the majority of the game in net, was praised for his play by Thiel coach Shem Johnston-Bloom. Cornwell made 15 saves on 29 shots on goal by Hilbert.

Francis Ahia (Penn Hills, Pa., Penn Hills) scored two goals and had one assist while teammate Andrew Shaver (Liverpool, N.Y., West Genesee) had one goal. The two are tied for the team lead with 19 points. Scoring one goal apiece for Thiel were Taylor Zain (Pickerington, Ohio, Pickerington North), Eddie Palmer (Cleveland, Ohio, Shaker Heights) and Yancey Burks (Bowling Green, Ky., Greenwood ).

Zain's goal came with some flare as he came around the crease and dove, beating the goalie low for his fourth goal of the season.

Kaleb Rose (Bowling Green, Ky., Greenwood) snagged a team-high eight groundballs for the Tomcats. Ahia added six while Josh Derricoatte (Cleveland, Ohio, Shaker Heights) and Palmer chipped in with three apiece.

Hilbert goalie Pat Lunderman picked up his fourth win of the season. He stopped 11 of the 17 shots he faced.

Thiel will face another tough offensive team at home this Saturday with a game against Alfred, the seventh-best goal scoring team in Division III.
