NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Fifth-year head coach
Tim Loomis and the Thiel men's basketball team captured the programs' first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) regular-season title since 2002-2003 while setting a single-season record in victories Saturday at Westminster College's Buzz Ridl Gymnasium as they defeated the home standing Titans 80-64.
The Tomcats' 17 victories this season (17-6 overall, 12-1) surpasses the 16 that were registered by Thiel teams during the 1997-1998, 1999-2000, and 2002-2003 seasons. Thiel posted its most recent PAC Tournament Championship during following the 1999-2000 campaign.
Lance Randall (Canfield, Ohio, Ursuline) scored a career-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting to pace the Tomcats offensively; Randall also registered six rebounds and three assists.
Anthony Harvey (New Castle, Pa., New Castle) notched 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting (3-3 3-PT) to go along with five assists while
Ladell Trotty (Cleveland, Ohio, Lutheran East) and
Aundra Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Kennedy Catholic) each finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Matt Shiner had a game-high 13 points off of the bench for Westminster. Anthony Thomas and Doug Smith added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Thiel shot a staggering 52.6 percent (30-57) from the floor and finished the game with a 44-27 margin on the glass. Westminster (5-17, 2-11) was limited to just 34.4 percent shooting (21-61) on the afternoon.
The Tomcats will travel to Crestview Hills, Ken. on Wednesday, Feb. 16 to take on Thomas More College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
