WASHINGTON, D.C. – The women's basketball team fell by a final score of 56-41 to host Catholic University of America Friday afternoon at the annual CUA Holiday Tournament.
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) was the lone Tomcat player to register double figures as she finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) added five points and a game-best 10 points.
Thiel (2-8) finished shooting just 27.8 percent (15-54) from the floor and went just 7-of-28 (25.0%) from the free throw line.
Jill Woerner led the Catholic (9-1) offense, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds, and six steals. Kelli Josephsen added nine points and six rebounds while Claire McEvily added eight points and five rebounds.
The Cardinals shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the floor and converted 24 Tomcat turnovers into 25 points. The Catholic bench also outscored its Thiel counterparts 27-14.
Barzak scored the opening points of the game at the 19:53 mark but the Cardinals used a 14-2 run, capped by an Alexis Steftennagel three, covering the ensuing 6:58 to assume a 14-2 edge with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half. A
Kate Reinsel (Brookville, Pa./Brookville Area) three with just over six remaining in period pulled the Tomcats back to within seven, 20-17, but Catholic outscored the visiting Tomcats 6-2 down the stretch to notch a 26-15 halftime lead.
Muffley's three-pointer with just under 17 minutes to play helped Thiel cut Catholic's second half lead down to eight, 31-23, but the Cardinals followed with a 14-1 run to push their lead to 21, 45-24, with 10:30 remaining. Catholic watched its lead grow to as many as 22 before securing the 15-point victory.
The Tomcats will play the loser of Friday's matchup between St. John Fisher College and Washington College at noon on Saturday.
