GREENVILLE, Pa. – Despite earning a 25-20 game one victory against visiting fifth-seeded Westminster College, Thiel watched the Titans earn set wins in the second, the third, and the pivotal fifth to record a 3-2 win over the fourth-seeded Tomcats Tuesday evening at Beeghly Gymnasium in the opening round of the 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament.
Thiel (19-11) notched the 25-20 win in the first set before watching Westminster (20-11) jump out to a 2-1 lead by posting 25-23 and 25-22 wins in the second and third. The Tomcats used an early 9-4 advantage to register a 25-22 game four win before the Titans overcame an early 6-4 deficit to secure the 15-8 game five win.
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) led all Tomcat players, finishing with 16 kills. She also added 5.5 total blocks, three digs, and two service aces.
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson Milton) added 14 kills and 16 digs while
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) guided the Tomcat offense with 48 assists and 16 digs.
Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) totaled 11 kills and 13 digs while
Alex Hall (Norwin, Pa./Norwin) and Sarah Weikert tallied 21 and eight digs, respectively.
Tara Ott led the Titan offense with 17 kills while chipping in defensively with 17 digs. Jessie Szakacs distributed 43 assists and helped out defensively with 24 digs. Megan Romocean and Rebecca Riemer finished with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Tara Incerpi guided the Titan defensive success with 28 digs while Tamber Schaef helped out with 17.
