GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Tomcat women's volleyball program won both games of a tri-match against Westminster College and Waynesburg University on Saturday in Greenville, Pa.
In the first contest the Tomcats went up against Westminster College and they defeated the Titans in four sets (25-21; 20-25; 25-21; 25-22).
In the first set of the game, the two teams were evenly matched and were tied 17-17 until the tomcats went on an 8-4 run to close out the first set 25-21. The Titans earned set two, as junior Tara Incerpi scored the first six point of the set. Thiel could only get as close as four points the rest of the set and fell in set two 25-20.
Once again in set three, the Tomcats and Titans found themselves knotted at 17 apiece before Thiel went on an 8-4 to win the set 25-21.
The teams started set four going back-and forth until they were tied at five before Thiel put up a 5-0 run behind two kills from
Ashley Donnelly (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron ). Westminster would then answer, down 14-9, with a 5-0 run of their own to knot the teams at 14. With the teams tied at 18 all,
Megg Andrews (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) accounted for four kills as the Tomcats went on a 7-4 run to give them the 25-22 set win and the 3-1 victory.
Middle Hitters
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and
Megg Andrews (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) led the way offensively for the Tomcats as they notched 18 and 11 kills respectively in the contest.
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) added 40 assists and defensively,
Lauren Downs (Mentor, OH/Mentor HS) led the way with 20 digs.
In their second game of the day, the Tomcats swept Waynesburg University (25-11; 25-14; 27-25).
In the first set, tied 3-3, the Tomcats rattled off nine consecutive points with
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson Milton) serving and went on to out-score Waynesburg 22-8 the rest of the way taking the first set 25-11.
The Tomcats then kept rolling as
Darin Barnhart (Titusville, Pa./Titusville)'s ace capped a 4-0 run to start the second set. The Tomcats extended the lead even further as they went on an 8-3 run to go up 11-3 in the set. They would go on to take set two 25-14.
The Yellow Jackets put up a fight in game three but the Tomcats put them away 27-25 to take set three and the game 3-0.
In the second game, it was the outside hitters' turn to shine as Chine and
Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) led the team offensively with 10 kills apiece. Once again Meister orchestrated the offense with 29 assists and as a team the Tomcats registered 7 aces.
Defensively, Alexandra Hall led the way with ten digs and the team registered seven total blocks.
With the victories the Tomcats move to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the PAC. The team continues conference play on Tuesday when they host the Saints of Thomas More College. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
