Tomcats Defeat Presidents 3-0

GREENVILLE, Pa. — In a day where their seniors were honored, the Thiel College volleyball team defeated the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson by a score of 3-0 (25-12; 25-17; 25-13) on Saturday afternoon in Greenville.

In the first set, senior Sarah Weikart (Washingtonville, Ohio/Leetonia) set the pace for the Tomcats as she recorded three aces in the set and Thiel cruised to take the first set 25-12.

In set two, the Tomcats struggled a little at the beginning and found themselves down 9-7. With Weikart once again serving, the Tomcats took the lead on a Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) kill and then pulled away with two kills from Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland). Thiel would use the gained momentum to take set two 25-17.

In the third set, down 3-0, the Tomcats used a 7-0 run, capped by another Weikart ace, to swing the momentum in their favor. Two aces by Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) and three solo blocks by Barzak finished off the Presidents in the third set 25-13.

Barzak led the way offensively and defensively for the Tomcats as she registered 12 kills and six total blocks in the victory. Playing in their last home game, Kay tallied nine kills, eight digs and two aces, and Weikart totaled four service aces and six digs on the day.

With the victory today, the Tomcats locked up the third seed in the conference tournament and will host a first round playoff game on Tuesday November 1 at 7 p.m. where they will play host to either the Titans of Westminster of the Saint Vincent Bearcats.
