GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel College men's basketball team ran its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) winning streak to five as they earned a 59-47 victory over rival Grove City College Saturday afternoon at the Grove City College Arena.
Thiel (9-4, 5-0) sophomore
Blair Rozenblad (Youngstown, Ohio, Kennedy Catholic) led the Tomcats offensively, finishing with a game-high 15 points and six rebounds. Sophomore
Aundra Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Kennedy Catholic) added 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while sophomore
Ladell Trotty (Cleveland, Ohio, Lutheran East) chipped in with 11. Thiel finished the game with a 43-30 rebounding edge.
Brett Matson led the Wolverines (4-9, 1-4) with 13 points and six rebounds and
Charlie Thomas (North Warren Pa./Warren Area) added 10.
Thiel jumped out to an early 8-0 advantage, capped by senior
Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa., George Junior Republic) layup with 16:20 to go in the first. With the Tomcats leading 16-8 with just under nine remaining Grove City put together a 9-2 run to pull to within one, 18-17, with 6:48 to play in the first. A pair of Rozenblad free throws put the Tomcats in front by three, 20-17, with a little over four remaining before Thomas' three-pointer tied the game at 20 with 3:12 left. Chace McKinney (Boardman, Ohio, Kennedy Catholic) layup with 1:58 to play before Matson's layup with 11 seconds to go tied the game at 22 heading into the break.
Jones paced the Tomcats in the first half, scoring five to go along with five rebounds. Adams, Trotty, and Rozenblad each scored four. The Tomcats finished the opening half shooting 37.5 percent (9-24) from the field, including 0-for-5 from beyond three-point range, but did go into the break with a 20-18 advantage on the glass.
Thomas paced the Wolverine scoring in the first, finishing with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. Matson added seven points and four rebounds. Grove City shot just 31 percent from the floor in the first (9-29) but connected on 4-of-14 three-point shots.
Grove City's Kris Verderber tied the game 31-31 with 16:48 to play before a Tomcat 10-4 run, capped by a Rozenblad layup at the 12:07 mark, saw the visitors jump out to a six-point advantage, 41-35. Matson's layup at the 7:33 mark pulled Grove City back to within four, 46-42, but the Tomcats outscored the Wolverines 16-0 over the next 4:21 to extend their lead out to 17, 59-42, with 3:12 to play. Jones had six points during the spurt.
The Tomcats return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 12 when they host Westminster College at Beeghly Gymnasium. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.
