BEREA, Ohio — Thiel suffered a 3-0 loss to Walsh University in its opening match of a women's volleyball quad match hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College on Wednesday. The Tomcats bounced back with a 3-0 win over the host Yellow Jackets to even their season record at 1-1.
In the loss to Walsh, a Division II team, Thiel fell 25-19, 25-18, 25-15.
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) and
Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio, Liberty) had six and four kills, respectively for the Tomcats.
Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio, Mentor) led the team with 17 digs while Kay chipped in with 13 digs.
Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio, Cuyahoga Heights) notched 18 assists.
In the second game, Chylik had 33 assists and 19 digs as the Tomcats swept B-W 25-21, 25-17, 25-23.
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio, Jackson-Milton ) tallied a team-best 10 kills with Barzak and
Hillary Hambleton (Geneva, Ohio, Geneva) finishing with nine and seven, respectively. Shipley had 24 digs and Kay had 18. Thiel finished with 83 digs as a team.
The Tomcats will have one day off before competing in the the two-day Midwest Challenge in Grand Rapids, Mich.. They will take on the University of Mount Union and host Calvin College on Friday and Hope College and Cornerstone University on Saturday. Hope is currently ranked fourth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll while Calvin is ranked ninth.
