Tomcats Lose to W&J in Home Finale

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Playing in their final home game of the season, the Tomcats fell to Washington & Jefferson 47-14 Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference football game.

Despite the loss, Thiel continued its offensive improvement by racking up 345 yards, including 259 through the air. Unfortunately for the Tomcats, who entered the game as the conference leader in pass defense, the President's also had a successful day passing the football.

Three different W&J quarterbacks threw for a touchdown. Starter Geno Rometo threw for 206 yards and two scores while Andrew Cappucci and Steven Shumaker threw one touchdown pass apiece. Jordan Roycroft was on the receiving end of a large chunk of the Presidents' passing plays, finishing with eight catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns.

The Presidents, who improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the PAC, led 7-0 after one quarter thanks to a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cappucci to Alex Baroffio. They upped the lead to 34-0 with three touchdowns in second quarter. Roycroft caught touchdown passes of 36 and 28 yards and Tim McNerney scored on a one and five-yard runs.

Thiel got on the board with a touchdown early in the quarter as freshman Nate Houpt (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) hauled in a seven-yard pass from freshman Jared Soell (Oakmont, Pa., Riverview). Berend Grube (Venetia, Pa./Peters Twp.)'s extra point attempt was good to make the score 34-7.

W&J added two more scores on a 10-yard run by Rometo and a 26-yard reception by Nick Puckett. Thiel completed the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Soell to Derrell McCaleb (Ashtabula, Ohio, Lakeside).

Soell had a great game for the Tomcats. He led the team in rushing with 67 yards and threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Turkalj (Greensburg, Pa., Hempfield) caught five passes for 90 yards, Houpt had five catches for 58 yards and Ron Howard (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) had four receptions for 87 yards.

Junior Ryan Dawes (Transfer, Pa., Reynolds) was Thiel's leading tackler with 11 stops, including five solo and 1.5 for a loss. Senior Bobby Shew (Mogadore, Ohio, Mogadore) made eight tackles. Ethan Ludwig (East Liverpool, Ohio, East Liverpool) and William Haase (Latrobe, Pa., Derry Area) teamed up for a sack and Marshaun Hainesworth (Warren, Ohio, John F. Kennedy) had a first quarter interception.

Twelve Thiel players were making their final appearance at Alumni Stadium. In addition to Shew and Haase, Matt Endlish (Chicora, Pa., Karns City), Jason Joens (Spring Hill, Fla., Nature Coast), Vince Palmiere (Tarentum, Pa., Deer Lakes), Gary Petrucci (Pittsburgh, Pa., Keystone Oaks), Matt Shields (North Jackson, Ohio, Jackson-Milton), Cody Sirgey (St. Petersburg, Fla., Northside Christian), Andy Stine (Morann, Pa., Moshannon Valley), Adam Troup (Greensburg, Pa., Hempfield), Bryan Villegas (Spring Hill, Fla., Springstead) and Zach Woody (New Palestine, Ind., Corbin) were all honored on Senior Day.
