Crestview Hills, Ky. -- The Thiel College women's volleyball team is going back to the Presidents' Athletic Conference title game for the second time in two years as they defeated Westminster College in straight sets (25-22, 27-25, 25-17) on Friday night in Crestview Hills, Ken.
The Tomcats started out strong against the Titans as they went up 10-4 to open the first game. However, Westminster was able to make a 6-1 run of their own to cut the Thiel lead to 11-10. But despite the effort, Westminster never led in the game as the Blue & Gold took game one 25-22.
Westminster came right back in game two and jumped out to a 14-8 lead but the Tomcats held strong and were able to battle back to take the game 27-25. Thiel would also take game three 25-17 to complete the sweep and move on to the conference finals.
Thiel relied on an overall team effort and great defense to pick up the victory over the Titans. Five Tomcats registered double-digit digs in the game including freshman libero Jenna Samsa (Rittman, Ohio, Wadsworth) (26), senior setter Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio, Cuyahoga Heights) (14), junior outside hitter Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio, Liberty) and senior defensive specialist Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio, Mentor) (15) and sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio, Jackson-Milton ) (12). The team also recorded 12 team blocks.
When asked about his team's defense, head coach Steve Brewer said, “Our team has always been based on great defense, and once again we showed that tonight as our girls had a total team effort on the defensive side of the ball.”
Thiel will go into the finals facing a familiar foe as they will compete against top-seeded Thomas More, who defeated Saint Vincent in straight sets in the early game of the day.
The championship game between the two top seeds in the conference begins at 4 p.m. in Crestview Hills.
