GREENVILLE, Pa. – On a day when the Thiel women's volleyball team honored its seniors, the Tomcats defeated Saint Vincent College in five sets to expand its Presidents' Athletic Conference record to 12-2.
The Tomcats (20-10; 12-2 PAC) had to overcome adversity in the game as they dropped the first two sets to the Bearcats 25-23 and 25-21 respectively.
However, in game three something clicked for the Tomcats as they took set three 25-14. Then after taking set four by the same score the Blue and Gold easily finished off Saint Vincent 15-6.
“It's good to have a game like this,” said coach Steve Brewer.
“It was nice to have some adversity and have the girls rise above it, I think that in the end a game like this will only make our girls better.”
Leading the Tomcats today were a pair of seniors who made the most of their day. Senior setter
Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio, Cuyahoga Heights) set up the offense nicely as she had 40 assists on the day and senior defensive specialist
Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio, Mentor) added 19 digs on the defensive end to give her 2,017 on her career, which is a school record.
“I am very proud of our seniors,” said Brewer “most of them have played every year since they were freshman and they are one of the big reasons that we are successful.”
Also joining the Tomcat attack were sophomore middle hitter
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland), who had 15 kills, and freshman libero
Jenna Samsa (Rittman, Ohio, Wadsworth) who tallied 34 digs on the day.
The Tomcats, who sealed the second seed in the PAC tournament, will finish the regular season Sunday at home against PAC leader Thomas More. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
