WESTERVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 19, 2009) – The Thiel volleyball team split on the last day of play at the Otterbein Cardinal Classic Saturday, to finish with a record of 3-1 at the event. To close tournament play, the Tomcats defeated Trine, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18), but then fell to Columbus State by the same margin (25-14, 25-17, 26-24).
Against Trine, freshmen
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) and
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) (Warren, Ohio/Howland) teamed up to pace the Thiel offense, registering 13 and six kills, respectively.
Barzak also posted five blocks, as did fellow rookie
Megg Andrews (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield).
Junior setter
Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) led the Tomcats with 26 assists.
In what was Thiel's only loss of the weekend, Chine once again had a strong outing, coming up with nine kills and nine digs. Chylik notched 21 assists.
Thiel (9-7) returns to action on Monday when they visit Washington & Jefferson for a 7 p.m. match.
