GREENVILLE, Pa. (Dec. 12, 2009) – Despite a second half run that pulled the Tomcats to within three, the Washington & Jefferson Presidents overcame Thiel College, 78-65, in men's basketball Saturday afternoon.
Down by nine points with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation, junior
Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./George Junior Republic) kicked off the Tomcats' 8-3 run with a three-pointer.
Blair Rozenblad (Youngstown, Ohio/Kennedy Catholic) hit a free throw and
Aundra Jones (Youngstown, Ohio/Kennedy Catholic) and
Sean Devinney (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic) (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic) each chipped in jumpers to pull Thiel within striking distance, 60-57.
The Presidents' would come roaring back to gain their largest lead of the game – 14 points – just five minutes later.
Thiel had three players reach double-digit scoring totals, led by Adams who compiled a game-high 21. Rozenblad tossed in 14 in just nine minutes of work, while senior
Cory Chaffee (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) notched 13 points.
W&J out-rebounded the 'Cats, 31-21, on the evening, including a 10-to-6 margin on the offensive glass. The Presidents' notched 10 second-chance points in the contest.
Paul Mathews paced the W&J offense with 20 points.
Thiel (3-5; 0-1 Presidents') returns to action on Dec. 29th when they take part in a tournament at Case Western Reserve.
