Volleyball wraps up strongest regular season since '86

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Pct. 29, 2009) – The Thiel College volleyball team closed out its regular season with a, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-19), Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Washington & Jefferson Thursday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.

Thiel put the finishing touches on a 22-10 (11-3 PAC) campaign, which is the program's best since going 24-12 in 1986. The Tomcats' 11 conference wins is a team record.

Thiel also wrapped up their home season with a 9-1 mark and notched their 15th 3-0 win of the year.

Sophomore OH Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) notched a double-double with a team-high 13 kills in addition to 14 digs. Freshmen Megg Andrews (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) (Warren, Ohio/Howland) each fired seven kills.

Junior Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) led Thiel with 17 digs, while fellow junior Danielle Dwyer (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) chipped in 13.

Dwyer also blasted four services aces in helping the Tomcats jump out to an, 11-1, third-set lead, which would prove to be insurmountable.

Seniors Abbey Kiger (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) and Cyndi Metzler (Industry/Western Beaver) (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver) were honored in a pregame ceremony, before what was their final scheduled match on the Beeghly Gymnasium court.

Thiel now awaits its draw in either the first- or semi-final round of the PAC tournament.
