GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 10, 2009) – It was a historic afternoon in Beeghly Gymnasium as the Thiel Volleyball team swept a tri-match featuring the Presidents' Athletic Conference's top two teams and gained a new all-time kills leader at the same time.
Thiel laid the first conference losses of the season on both Thomas More (16-7; 6-1 PAC) and Westminster (8-15; 7-2 PAC) while senior OH
Abbey Kiger (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) fired 17 kills to break the College record for career kills with 1,195.
Thiel's, 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-9, 25-19) victory over Westminster was paced by freshmen
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and
Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) who accumulated 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Kiger notched nine kills in the match, leaving her seven from the mark.
Setter
Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) sparked the offense with 40 assists, and pitched in 21 digs.
Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) registered a team-high 26 digs, while
Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) chipped in 19.
Thiel's win over Westminster was the Tomcats first against the Titans in 23 years.
In a thrilling five-set match, Thiel outlasted Thomas More, 3-2 (25-20, 15-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-10), to give the Saints the lone blemish on their 6-1 PAC record.
The trio of Kay, Barzak, and
Megg Andrews (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) pulled through on offense, racking up 12, 11, and nine saves, respectively.
Five Tomcats turned in defensive gems of 20 or more digs, led be Kay with 28.
Danielle Dwyer (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) followed with 23, with Chine, Chylik, and Shipley each notching 20.
Chylik also came up with 41 assists to bring her total for the day to 81.
Thiel combined for an impressive 20.5 team blocks on the afternoon.
The Tomcats (16-7; 7-1 PAC) welcome Saint Vincent for a 7 p.m. match on Oct. 13.
