Westminster holds 'Cats at bay to clinch PAC win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Westminster College never trailed as it shot its way to an, 80-63, Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Thiel College in men's basketball action at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday night.

The host Titans shot 50 percent from the field and were led by a 17-point, seven-for-14 effort by Mike Pratkanis, who came off the bench. Steve Bielich was also red-hot for Westminster, converting six-of-seven shot from the field – including a perfect three-for-three from behind the arc - on his way to 16 points.

Senior point guard Brandon Mirizio (West Middlesex,Pa./Kennedy Catholic) paced Thiel with 16 points, while junior transfer Sean Devinney (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic) continued his recent hot streak with an 11-point performance.

Despite being down by as many as 19 points in the first half, the Tomcats showed some fight by cutting their deficit to nine with under ten minutes to play in the second period.  The Titans showed no mercy though, quickly rebuilding their lead to 17 just four minutes later.

Thiel out-rebounded Westminster, 34-28, but were plagued by 22 turnovers, which translated into 19 Titan points.

The Tomcats – for the first time this calendar year – outscored their opponent off the bench.  Thiel reserves scored 35 points to Westy's 27.

Thiel (1-13, 0-5 PAC) return home on Saturday to host Geneva in a 3 p.m. contest.
